Hoyos: “2024 will be the year in which we must defend freedom, security and prosperity in Europe”

Vienna (OTS) – NEOS General Secretary Douglas Hoyos reacts to the emerging election results in Slovakia with a mixed assessment: “I congratulate our liberal friend and colleague Michal Simecka and his Progressive Slovakia (PS) on a strong election result in Slovakia! It is a clear sign of our common European values, in which Austria, above all, as a neighboring country, must have great interest.”

At the same time, Hoyos is concerned that “populism was strengthened again yesterday.” It is a great danger to freedom, security and prosperity in Europe when right-wing and left-wing populists stir up doubts about Europe’s common political values and positions. “This is particularly true with regard to those forces that want to weaken Europe from within and without and thus play into the hands of the enemies of our liberal democracy.” The NEOS Secretary General once again appeals in view of the pro-Russian stance of the expected election winner Robert Fico for an unequivocal demarcation and condemnation of Vladimir Putin’s war against Ukraine.

2024 will be a crucial year for Europe, “in which we must resolutely defend freedom, security and prosperity in the EU.” Together with progressive and liberal forces, NEOS will continue to do everything in its power to “make Europe more capable of acting, more capable of making decisions and, last but not least, more capable of defending itself . This is the only way our continent has a chance of a good future for all its citizens.”
