Bernhard: “Instead of finally curbing the unbridled consumption of land, the government simply does nothing and watches, twiddling its thumbs, as Austria becomes a concrete desert.”

Vienna (OTS) “The will of the ÖVP and the Greens to control the rampant consumption of land is as dead as the soil that is used every day,” says NEOS climate and environment spokesman Michael Bernhard in view of the latest calculations from the Austrian Spatial Planning Conference (ÖROK), according to which The sealed area in Austria is expected to be even larger than previously assumed. “We NEOS have been making sensible and constructive suggestions for years about how we can slow down land consumption – for example through a federal framework law for spatial planning, transparent, supra-regional infrastructure planning with binding target values or, most recently, sensitive sanctions for those federal states that exceed these target values. Our applications have been on the table for years. But the government is vehemently resisting any constructive suggestion, thereby exposing not only its blatant forgetfulness of the future, but also its lack of strength and courage. It is a shame how indifferent the federal government is in dealing with the greatest environmental sin that we could immediately solve ourselves – this is an indictment, especially for the Greens.”

Austria is one of the European leaders when it comes to land consumption. 17 football fields are used every day. With their inaction, the ÖVP and the Greens would ruin the future for future generations, said Bernhard: “Austria is sinking into concrete and asphalt – with catastrophic consequences for the environment, the climate and for all the people who live here. But instead of finally curbing the unbridled consumption of land, the government simply does nothing and watches, twiddling its thumbs, as Austria becomes more and more a concrete desert. This is irresponsible, we cannot continue like this.”
