Brandstötter: “If Raab now pushes the VfGH’s mandate into the future, she will prove once again that she is a miscast who only has the ÖVP’s goals in mind.”

Vienna (OTS) – “Media Minister Raab took his time for months when it came to the ORF digital amendment. The fact that she is now announcing that she will sit back on the ORF committee reform is really a farce,” criticizes NEOS media spokeswoman Henrike Brandstötter in relation to current statements by the ÖVP media minister. “The issue no longer needs to be ‘looked at from different sides’ when the Constitutional Court has long since determined that parts of the appointment and composition of the ORF Foundation and Audience Council are unconstitutional. There is no way around depoliticizing the committees.”

Concrete concepts of what this depoliticization could look like have long been on the table, emphasizes Brandstötter: “We NEOS have been calling for years to reduce the influence of party politics by dissolving the board of trustees and its political circles of friends. It should be replaced by a governance structure appropriate to the time and size of the company with an independent supervisory board, which in turn appoints and monitors a multi-member board with a clear distribution of responsibilities. In this way, we can prepare the ORF as an agile company to meet the challenges of the future and prevent it from continuing to degenerate into the plaything of changing governments.”

As a first step, Media Minister Raab must finally start a broad process with strong involvement of civil society. “The ORF has a special position in the Austrian media landscape – and we have to redefine it together in the 21st century. What is the mission and what are the goals of the public broadcaster? What does public value mean today? And how can we finally free the ORF from the tyranny of politics?” says Brandstötter. “If Media Minister Raab doesn’t finally take action now, but continues to sit back and push the Constitutional Court’s mandate into the future, then she will prove once again that she is the wrong person who only has the ÖVP’s goals in mind. “
