Brandstätter: “Our European values are massively under attack. We must and will defend ourselves against this with all our might.”
Vienna (OTS) – “This study must be a wake-up call for all of us,” says NEOS foreign policy spokesman and EU leading candidate Helmut Brandstätter about the current “Economist” index, according to which the state of democracy has deteriorated massively worldwide. “In Europe, too, we all see and feel that our European values and the cornerstones of our democracy are under attack – from outside, but also from within the EU. We must and will defend ourselves with all our might against these destroyers of democracy and the future, no matter where they come from.”
This requires a Europe capable of acting, defending itself and making decisions. Brandstätter: “To be honest, anyone who is against Europe is against Austria. Anyone who wants to weaken the EU wants to weaken the Austrians. And anyone who is a friend of democracy and future destroyers like Weidel, Le Pen, Putin or Orbán wants to make Austria poor, dependent and defenseless. I grew up as an ardent European and was able to see how the communist dictatorships fell and the European Union was built. I have seen how the EU has helped us achieve security and prosperity and has given Austria a whole new relevance as a location. We must not allow this Austria, this Europe, to be destroyed by autocrats. We must uphold and defend our democratic values. And we must make it clear to everyone who lives in Austria and Europe: Our faith is democracy – and we will not accept if our democracy is openly attacked. We must resolutely repel attacks like those from Viktor Orbán, who wants to abolish direct elections to the European Parliament, in order not to destroy democracy.”
