Netflix reveals first euro costs for account sharing – ICT news

Netflix is forgoing unauthorized account sharing, which is costing it quite a bit of revenue. After taking action in a few Latin American countries, the streaming service is now taking on Europe, starting with paid sub-accounts in Spain and Portugal. Other countries will follow in the coming months, the company said this week.

Netflix estimates that globally some 100 million households use the Netflix account of a family member or friend. This represents a shortfall for the streaming service, which wishes to react, as it had already announced previously.

The first countries in Europe, where the new rules will apply, will be Spain and Portugal. In these countries, Netflix users will certainly be able to continue to share their Standard or Premium account with (maximum) two other people who do not live under the same roof, but now for an additional fee. The price will differ from the rest from one country to another: the Spaniards will pay 5.99 euros per month more per person, compared to 3.99 euros for the Portuguese.

The amounts you will pay, probably soon also in our country, for sub-accounts, however, will be lower than the usual rates for a Netflix subscription: the Standard formula currently costs 13.49 euros per month, while the Premium subscription more extensive costs 17.99 euros. The cheaper Basic formula (8.99 euros) is not taken into account for sub-accounts.

The new rules will be immediately applied in Canada and New Zealand as well. Whether Netflix users will be willing to pay more or leave the streaming service remains to be seen. The company hopes to convince the customer to stay with exclusive content. In some regions, it will also offer a more affordable basic formula, accompanied by advertisements.
