If you managed to escape the removal of Netflix’s Essential subscription… it won’t last much longer.
At the end of 2023, Netflix announced the end of its Essential subscription at €8.99, the offer that had made the streaming platform successful. For many years, it had been the American giant’s least expensive formula, attracting a very wide audience.
Last December, it was replaced by an even cheaper subscription, but with advertising. This new source of income is very important for Netflix, which thus reaches an even wider population. For the moment, success is there: “the offer with advertising represents 40% of all Netflix registrations in markets where it has been launched,” according to the company.
It is therefore impossible to subscribe to the Essential offer, but until now, those who were already subscribed to it could still keep their advantages at the same price. Unfortunately, this extension won’t last forever.
In the coming months, users will have to choose among other subscription plans. These changes will come to Canada and the United Kingdom in the second quarter of 2024.
As for Europe, the measure should apply there subsequently. All that remains is to wait for announcements from the platform on a more precise schedule in the coming months. Be careful though that your subscription is not automatically transformed into Standard without advertising, the more expensive formula.
To recap, there are now only three different subscriptions left for Netflix:
- Standard with advertising: €5.99 per month, with advertisements before and during playback, Full HD video quality (1080p) and 2 simultaneous screens / 2 devices for download.
- Standard: €13.49 per month, without advertisements, Full HD video quality (1080p) and 2 simultaneous screens / 2 devices for download.
- Premium: €19.99 per month, without ads, Ultra HD (4K) and HDR video quality, and 4 simultaneous screens / 6 devices for download.
