Netherlands extends sanctions and makes it difficult to export chip machines to China

the government of the netherlands announced new restrictions on the export of equipment that can be used to produce semiconductors in China. The initiative is part of the country’s alliance with the US government.

According to administration representatives, the measure should reach a “very limited” number of companies and products, and the restriction is valid for countries that can use advanced chips in military equipment. That is, China was not mentioned.

Despite this, it is not quite new that the sanctions are directed at the Asian country.

Commenting on the matter, the Dutch trade minister, Liesje Schreinemacher, added that the measure will not hinder the sale of ASML machines.

We are taking this step in the interest of protecting our national security.

With the new rules taking effect on September 1, ASML and other machine makers must apply for government authorization before exporting equipment to China.

In a statement shared last Friday, ASML said the sanction should not affect its business model, as the most advanced “EUV machines” were never shipped to China.

ASM International, which manufactures atomic layer tools, also pointed out that the measure should not affect its exports.

However, the announcement by the government of the Netherlands aroused the ire of China. The country’s embassy issued a note saying that the Dutch have been abusing sanctions at the behest of the United States.

We ask Holland to correct its mistakes immediately. Restrictions imposed in the name of national security are actually trade restrictions that hurt Chinese and Dutch companies.
