The Kuomintang recently held a series of press conferences, questioning Kaohsiung Mayor Chen Qimai’s occupation of public-funded students and the deduction of his doctor’s license. Chen Qimai emphasized that he is a real doctor and public health worker, and asked the outside world to examine his past. “Understanding Taiwan’s social reform is to fulfill my responsibility to study medicine and be an intellectual.”
Kuomintang Taipei City Councilor Wang Hongwei held a press conference on the 2nd, and accused Chen Qimai of attending medical school in the name of a public student, but failed to fulfill his obligation to serve in remote villages. Logically speaking, the doctor’s license should be detained in the Ministry of Education, and he criticized Chen Qimai. “How to talk about the original intention of practicing medicine by using the term mayor of physicians to deceive the world?”. When he attended the event in the morning and was asked about his doctor’s license, Chen Qimai emphasized that “I am a real doctor, a real public health worker, and a down-to-earth political worker.”
Chen Qimai said that he participated in the wild lily student movement in March 1990. In 1991, he proposed to abolish Article 100 of the Criminal Code as a thought prisoner, striving for 100% freedom of speech. Pushed to amend the constitution until the first direct presidential election was completed in 1996.
Chen Qimai said that in the great era of pursuing Taiwan’s democratization, breaking authoritarianism, and practicing people’s pursuit of democracy and freedom, he chose to give up clinical work and devote himself to political reform, “As a medical student, I have no choice in my life. I regret it, this is also the goal I have worked hard for all my life.” He said that from the student days, participating in the student movement and social movement, whether it is environmental protection, anti-nuclear or underground radio, must be tested by voters.
Chen Qimai also emphasized that in the course of the great era, as a medical student, choosing to understand the process of social reform and democratization in Taiwan is to fulfill my entire responsibility of studying medicine and being an intellectual, and I have never regretted my choice.” We care about the needs of the people, and it is not during the election that we have some political language.”
