The next-generation Alpine A110 will be offered with both electric and internal combustion engine (ICE) powertrains, Alpine CEO Philippe Krief confirmed today, reversing previous statements that the model would be exclusively electric. The announcement came as Krief detailed plans for the new A110, slated to arrive later this year, to position Alpine as a leading electric performance brand.
Krief described the electric A110 as “the first true EV sports car” and asserted it will “outperform the best of today’s combustion” rivals. The new model will be built on the Alpine Performance Platform (APP), a new architecture initially developed for the Renault 5 Turbo 3E, as reported by Yahoo Autos. The platform’s adaptability to accommodate both electric and ICE powertrains was a deliberate design choice, Krief explained.
“The new A110 will be electric. The goal of Futuready [Renault Group’s future-looking plan] is to be prepared for the future, so we have developed the platform to receive an ICE,” Krief said. He emphasized that while the electric version is the primary focus, the option for an ICE variant remains open due to fluctuating legislation surrounding powertrains and emissions, particularly in Europe and the United States.
The flexibility also allows Alpine to target markets where electric vehicle adoption is less advanced. “At the moment we focus on Europe,” Krief stated. “If having an ICE engine offers opportunities for Alpine in other markets then we can make it.”
Alpine intends to expand the A110 lineup beyond the current coupé, with plans to introduce spider and 2+2 body styles. The long-term goal is to create a full range of models mirroring those offered by competitors like Porsche’s 911.
The APP platform utilizes 800V technology and an aluminum structure to minimize weight while maintaining structural rigidity. It is designed to be modular, enhancing both dynamic response and efficiency. The platform’s architecture incorporates two separate battery packs, achieving a 40:60 front-to-rear weight balance and allowing the new A110 to retain a similar shape to the existing ICE model, according to Ruetir.
The electric powertrain will feature a rear-wheel-drive, dual-motor setup. While the initial configuration will employ two rear-mounted electric motors, Alpine is also considering the use of in-wheel motors, a technology demonstrated in the Renault 5 Turbo 3E.
The A110 will incorporate full aluminum suspension, integrated braking and steering systems, and a new Alpine Dynamic Model ECU. This ECU will serve as a central control unit, integrating systems such as battery management, motors, braking, steering, and active aerodynamics. Active torque vectoring will be implemented to preserve the lightweight perceive of the current A110, despite the added weight of the battery packs. Alpine also aims to provide a “Formula 1-inspired driving position” to enhance the driving experience.
The new A110 will join Alpine’s growing electric lineup, alongside the A290 hatchback and A390 fastback.
