The National Institute of Health (INS) confirmed this Friday a new case of monkeypox in Colombia. The infected person and who had arrived a few days ago from Europe, is in Bogotá.
The health entity confirmed this new case after performing the PCR test on this person, after the citizen indicated that he had close contact with a confirmed case in Italy.
The infected man is in a isolation for 21 daysand the INS carries out a follow-up and fence with its closest people to rule out new cases.
Until now There are six confirmed positive cases in Colombia: five in Bogotá and one in Medellín. Of these cases, five of them have a history of travel to Europe and one with an epidemiological link.
Monkeypox is an infection that causes fever, swollen glands, rash on hands and face.
This virus can be transmitted by physical contact with a person who is infected or has symptoms. In addition, it can also be transmitted through the respiratory tract, body fluids and injuries.
A few days ago, the Deputy Minister of Public Health and Provision of Services, Germán Escobar, stated that Colombia is at a medium alert level, according to the World Health Organization (WHO) and to the risk studies that have been carried out by the technical team of the Ministry of Health.
Escobar also added that Colombia is on an epidemiological alert for this worldwide outbreak that, according to the WHO increased by 77% in the last week worldwide.
