“We want a fresh, young festival with a focus on quality.”

Andrei Gologan

BUZZ co-founder

Andrei Gologan: “We have experience as organizers and launched an online concert series during the pandemic. Benjamin Schmid and Thomas Riebl, as well as students from music universities from Vienna to London, were there.” This led to the idea of founding a festival and bringing the music to people in the countryside. “We thought Obertrum would be a good place and we were welcomed with open arms,” said Gologan and Circiu. The aim is to reach new, younger audiences with classical music of the highest quality. “We want to be a fresh, young, contemporary festival with a focus on quality. We also want to express that with the unusual name BUZZ, the whole place joins in and should be made to hum and hum.”

Pop-up concerts in unconventional locations

A special feature will be the planned pop-up concerts on April 27th in unconventional locations, which will change every two hours from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Music is played in the orchard of the Joglbauer organic farm, in the “Zum Gute Hirten” chapel, in the Jakobushaus retirement home and in the Trumer brewery. Young talents from Musikum share the stage with professional musicians from Salzburg, London and Berlin.

The festival kicks off on April 25th with a workshop in the elementary school under the motto “Humming and Humming” that is entirely dedicated to young talent. “Examples from the concert program are played and a dialogue is held with the children, for example how they feel about the individual instruments,” says Andrei Gologan. The day is rounded off with a vernissage by the artist Bianca Hateganu Kerschner in the Old Gärhalle.

Opening concert in the Obertrum parish church

The opening concert will take place on April 26th at 7 p.m. in the Obertrum parish church. Chamber music works influenced by folk music are played, including those by Brahms, Ligeti and Joseph Haydn. Gologan: “The common thread that runs through the entire festival is home and identity.”

The finale on April 28th, entitled “Destination: Hollywood,” is dedicated to those who have left their homeland. The concert in the parish church will feature pieces by Erich Wolfgang Korngold and George Gershwin, among others. In between there is jazz poetry with the American actor Darin Worrell. “The Obertrum parish church has wonderful acoustics in which the piano, a Bösendorfer grand, comes into its own,” says Roxana Circiu, delighted with the special ambience.

The BUZZ festival should not remain a flash in the pan; a continuation next year is already planned.
