New Commitments and Challenges: Improving UN Peace Operations | Conference in Ghana Updates

At a recent Ministerial Conference in Ghana, 57 Member States announced new commitments to address the current and future challenges and needs of UN peace operations.

These efforts to improve the effectiveness of peace operations come as the United Nations Mission in Mali, MINUSMA, prepares to close on December 31, 2023, and the United Nations Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the MONUSCOprepares its withdrawal.

In an interview with ONU Infothe head of peace operations, Jean-Pierre Lacroix, returns to the crucial role of peacekeeping soldiers in the areas they are deployed, but recognizes that peacekeeping is “handicapped by international divisions”, particularly within the Security Council.
