Overcoming deadlocked ensemble line-ups, celebrating new musical collaborations: THE FLIPSIDE COLLECTIVE With a five-piece line-up consisting of four instrumentalists and a singer, it moves away from gender-stereotypical band constellations in jazz and takes a step further with the gathering of Viola Hammer (piano), Alana McPherson (saxophone), Conor Ryan (vocals), Anna Reisigl (bass) and Lukas Aichinger (drums) explore new musical paths in the field of contemporary jazz.
The constellation of musicians brings together established Austrian musicians such as Viola Hammer (Hearbeat ProjectAndrzej Dobrowolski composition scholarship, debut album under Ö1-Edition Contemporary Jazz, etc.) and Lukas Aichinger (Trio Znapfounder of the label Laundromat Records, Ö1 Jazzstipendium 2019etc.) with promising young musicians from the Austrian scene such as Anna Reisigl, Alana McPherson and Conor Ryan.
In the course of The Flipside Collective Each musician also acts as a composer and thus brings their own musical improvisation language and composition aesthetics into the formation. The fusion in ensemble work, which was created in several work phases, will be presented in the form of three concerts in various venues in the city of Vienna. Each concert evening has a different musical focus:

In the first part of the concert series The Flipside Collective The focus is on lyrics and their musical expression. Compositions and fresh arrangements of lyrically interesting pieces await you.
11.11.23, Jazz Cafè ZWE – FREE: WITHIN THE LIMITS?
The second concert of The Flipside Collective is an evening dedicated to free improvisation within the ensemble. It is important to deal with the improvisation concepts that all musicians bring with them and to move away from them collectively by improvising together and to move into new realms.
12/13/23, Alte Schmiede Vienna – WEAVE IN(G)
The first concert of The Flipside Collective is dedicated to the original compositions of all musicians and tries to fully integrate the instrumental voice into the band context.
