New domestic worker law in UAE comes into effect from tomorrow

The Ministry of Human Resources and Indigenization has announced that the new federal law for employment of domestic workers in the UAE will come into effect from December 15. The UAE announced Federal Decree-Law No. (9) regarding domestic workers on October 5 this year.

The Ministry pointed out that the Act not only regulates the employment of domestic workers but also defines the rights and responsibilities of various parties concerned. The law also mandates the provision of a suitable working environment for domestic workers in accordance with national legislation and international agreements in force in the UAE.

According to the new law, the recruitment or temporary employment of domestic workers will be allowed only after obtaining the relevant license from the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE). Recruiting or employing a domestic worker under the age of 18 is strictly prohibited, and the employer is allowed to refuse to hire a domestic worker if the recruitment agency has violated the terms agreed in the contract.
