New for Touch ID technology under the screen, on iPhone

  • Apple would advance in the development of Touch ID under the screen
  • The technology won’t be ready for several years, though, it seems.
  • This solution has many advantages but also disadvantages.

Not long ago, we learned that Apple seems to be continuing to work on the development of face recognition under the screen, with Face ID. And now, it’s another alternative to the iPhone passcode that’s getting talked about again: Touch ID, also under the screen. According to an Asian informant, Apple thus made recent progress with this solution, which according to other rumors could arrive within three to four years on future mobiles. We don’t yet know which models will be affected, but the announced fourth-generation iPhone SE with the end of the home button will probably arrive too soon to qualify.

Of course, this rumor remains to be considered with caution, as often when it comes to confidential clues about the future projects of the firm at the apple. But this is not the first time that we have heard of the arrival of the fingerprint sensor under the screen at Apple, moreover the other manufacturers have already launched for a long time. The Vivo brand, for example, presented the X20 Plus UD in January 2018. In theory, if Apple waits until 2027then the firm could thus have close to ten years late on precursors.

Advantages and disadvantages

Touch ID under the screen, it is therefore the possibility of hiding the sensor, which ultimately allows save even more space then to be occupied by the slab. With this, it turns out that moving the component in this way ensures that it can be found as close as possible to the thumb, unlike certain locations on the side or at the back which require a few milliseconds to be reached by the index finger.

Only downside, and not the least: with a fingerprint sensor under the screen, your thumb will come hide part of the display during biometric unlocking. But Apple also seems to be thinking about a system that would circumvent this concern, according to a patent spotted by the media some time earlier.

A safer solution than the basic access code

Nevertheless, you should know that in terms of security, Touch ID is still more effective than a simple password to unlock the iPhone. Indeed, a recent investigation showed that thieves can sometimes spy on the owner of the device before taking action, which can then put their personal data at risk. But with Touch ID, impossible to access iOS content.
