New French Prime Minister Gabriel Atal: Macron’s Appointment and Political Implications

Paris: France’s Minister of Education Gabriel Atal has been appointed Prime Minister by French President Emmanuel Macron. The 34-year-old Atal has been appointed as the country’s youngest Prime Minister after the resignation of Elizabeth Bone.

Elizabeth Bone was asked to resign as part of the dismantling of Macron’s party, which lost its majority in parliament in 2022.

Gabriel Atal is also the country’s first gay Prime Minister. Macron noted in X that he is counting on Atal’s commitment and energy to accomplish the political goals of his presidency.

Elizabeth Bourne’s government resigned on December 8 in the face of negative public opinion. Bonn’s cabinet introduced pension reforms last year without a vote, sparking public outcry.

There was also criticism that Bonn had failed to tackle inflation and illegal immigration. After that, the National Rally Party’s support increased.

AFP reported that the resignation letter said Bone had an interest in remaining in the post and was being forced to resign.

The government reshuffle comes months before the Paris Olympics and European Parliament elections. It is estimated that Macron’s party will lose many seats in the European Union Parliament.
