The first cargo flight, coming from Lagos, Nigeria, landed on the night of Tuesday, 19th, at Dr. António Agaostinho Neto International Airport (AIAAN), in Luanda. The landing of the first cargo aircraft at the new airport comes 39 days following its inauguration, which took place on November 10th this year.
AIAAN occupies an area of 1,324 hectares, with a capacity for 15 million passengers, 10 million on international flights and 5 million on domestic flights, as well as a cargo volume of 130 thousand tons per year. With two parallel runways, the airport is prepared to receive, among others, aircraft of the B747 and A380 types, the latter considered the largest commercial aircraft today.
The South runway (the largest), which is 4 thousand meters by 60 meters wide, received, in June 2022, the first experimental flight of a Boeing 777 type aircraft from the national flag company – TAAG. In addition to the two runways, AIA-AN also has 31 lanes, of which 19 are for international services and 11 for domestic services, as well as 9 conveyor belts for baggage storage, six of which are dedicated to international flights. .
The new airport infrastructure, valued at USD 2.8 billion, occupies a land area of 1,324 hectares and can accommodate a cargo volume of 130 thousand tons/year. Located in the district of Bom Jesus, municipality of Icolo and Bengo, province of Luanda, the new airport is the third largest in Africa in terms of passenger volume per year.
