Changes to the LIRR schedule are looming beginning Tuesday, primarily related to an increase in express trains to Manhattan and Brooklyn. For morning rush hour trips, direct service to Brooklyn will be added from branches in Far Rockaway, Long Beach, Hempstead and Huntington. There will also be a change in how trains stop at certain stations in Queens, such as Rosedale, Laurelton, Locust Manor, Queens Village, and Hollis, as LIRR ridership data showed more riders traveling to Brooklyn from these locations. There will also be changes for all trains to and from Grand Central Terminal during evening and evening hours, as some trains that used to go to Grand Central will now go to Penn Station.
NEW YORK — Those taking the Long Island Rail Road can expect new schedule changes to be implemented Tuesday, most of which include more express trains to Manhattan and Brooklyn.
The MTA initially announced the changes in early summer after commuters complained about the service, particularly after the Grand Central Madison Station opened. Riders at the time said they saw fewer trains going to Penn Station and Atlantic Terminal, so the transit agency said there will be more service to midtown Manhattan, as well as more direct service to Brooklyn.
For morning rush hour travel, direct service to Brooklyn will be added from branches in Far Rockaway, Long Beach, Hempstead and Huntington, the MTA said. There will also be a change in how trains stop at certain stations in Queens, such as Rosedale, Laurelton, Locust Manor, Queens Village, and Hollis, as LIRR ridership data showed more riders traveling to Brooklyn from these places, according to the MTA.
There will also be changes for all trains to and from Grand Central Terminal from 10:30 p.m. to 2 a.m. Monday through Friday and 7 a.m. on weekends. Some of those schedule changes include that trains that used to go to Grand Central will now go to Penn Station. The MTA said the changes come to give more options to riders coming from concerts or sporting events, while allowing crews more time to perform maintenance in the tunnels.
The changes will take effect from Tuesday. Here’s a full breakdown of the changes coming to each line, according to the MTA:
brooklyn service
Service between Jamaica and Brooklyn will not change, and trains will continue to run approximately every eight minutes between the two stations, but there will be more direct trains from Long Island instead of shuttles.
Here are the other changes that could affect commuting:
Westbound weekday service will begin earlier, with a new Brooklyn-bound train leaving Jamaica at 4:31 am There is a new weekday train leaving the Atlantic Terminal at 3:32 pm to Jamaica. Monday through Friday, between approximately 9:50 am and 11:20 am, Brooklyn service will be reduced to one train per hour to allow for mandatory track inspections in the tunnel between Atlantic Terminal and Jamaica.
Kew Gardens, Forest Hills y Woodside
Most trains that stop at Kew Gardens during off-peak hours (midday, afternoon, evening and weekend) will now also stop at Forest Hills and vice versa. There will also be changes to train stops at Kew Gardens, Forest Hills and/or Woodside during morning hours, as the MTA said the changes are part of an effort to “improve reliability.”
Babylon Branch
Direct service to Brooklyn will no longer be available during the morning rush hour to allow for more service at the busiest branches in Brooklyn. The 7:49 am train from Freeport will go to Grand Central instead of Atlantic Terminal. The 8:54 am train from Freeport will no longer run. Alternative trains leave 16 minutes earlier or 6 minutes later.
Far Rockaway Branch
In the morning rush hour, four of Far Rockaway’s 10 trains will arrive at Atlantic Terminal instead of Manhattan, restoring direct service to Brooklyn on the branch. There will be one train stop change at the Rosedale, Laurelton and Locust Manor stations during morning rush hours. These stops will be made primarily on trains bound for Atlantic Terminal. On weekdays from 11 pm to 1 am, trains will run to and from Penn Station instead of Grand Central.
Hempstead Branch
Different trains will stop at the Elmont-UBS Arena, Queens Village and Hollis stations during morning rush hours. There will be four direct trains to Brooklyn from these stations each morning, instead of one. The 5:50 am weekday train from Hempstead will arrive at Penn Station instead of Grand Central. The 6:24 am weekday train from Hempstead will go to Grand Central instead of Penn Station. The 8:32 am weekday train from Hempstead will arrive at Atlantic Terminal instead of Penn Station.

The weekday 6:16 a.m. train from Long Beach will arrive at Atlantic Terminal instead of Grand Central, restoring direct service to Brooklyn on the branch line. The 6:55 am train from Oyster Bay will now depart at 7:01 am and will no longer stop at Glen Cove, Sea Cliff, Greenvale, Albertson or Mineola. Riders on the 7:17 a.m. train from Oyster Bay traveling to Penn Station will transfer to an empty train originating in Jamaica, reducing crowding.
Port Jefferson Branch
Two new morning rush hour local trains have been added to Penn Station, leaving Westbury at 6:34 am and Hicksville at 8:14 am Two morning rush hour trains from Huntington will run express from Syosset or Hicksville to Jamaica. The 4:59 am train from Huntington will arrive at Atlantic Terminal instead of Grand Central and will depart five minutes earlier at 4:54 am The 7:52 am train from Mineola will begin at Westbury and head to Atlantic Terminal instead of Grand Central. These trains restore direct service to Brooklyn on the branch.

The 6:08 and 6:11 pm weekday trains from Grand Central will be combined into one train, making all stops to Port Washington. On weekdays from 10:30 pm to 1 am, and on weekend mornings from midnight to 7 am, all trains will run to and from Penn Station instead of Grand Central.

The weekday 5:42 am train from Ronkonkoma to Penn Station will no longer run. Alternative trains are available 4 minutes earlier or 11 minutes later. A new weekday train will leave Penn Station at 2:55 pm and stop at Jamaica, Mineola, Hicksville and all stops through Ronkonkoma except Pinelawn. The 4:09 pm, 4:22 pm, and 10:05 pm weekday trains will depart from Penn Station instead of Grand Central. 5:25 pm The train from Penn Station to Brentwood will be extended to Central Islip and Ronkonkoma.
West Hempstead Branch
The 6:26 am weekday train from West Hempstead will arrive at Grand Central instead of Atlantic Terminal. The 7:01 pm weekday train from West Hempstead will no longer run east of Jamaica.
