New local police areas in Stockholm city

Police area Stockholm city is divided into new local police areas, LPO Norra innerstaden, LPO Lidingö – Kungsholmen and LPO Södermalm

The police

Two areas become three when the police in the city are divided. The concept Norrmalmspolisen thus goes to the grave – but emerges as if somewhere else.

Innerstaden will be divided into three local police areas (LPO): Lidingö-Kungsholmen, Norra innerstaden and Södermalm.

Today’s two areas – Norrmalm and Södermalm – are too large in terms of the number of employees, according to the police.

Meet citizens

The city of Stockholm is growing and the Police Agency is growing with it. Today, roughly 1,375 people are employed in the inner city and on Lidingö, around 1,000 police officers and 375 civilian employees, according to Felix Andåker, police area manager in Stockholm city.

By dividing the city and Lidingö into more areas, the working environment should be better for employees and managers, he believes. Even from the Police Union’s trade union side, they are positive about the new division.

In addition, the idea is to get in better contact with Stockholmers.

– Today LPO Norrmalm is very large, it covers several districts and Lidingö. Now you can work more focused on smaller geographical parts. The local police area must be at the forefront and meet citizens.

Why do Lidingö and Kungsholmen become one area when they are some distance from each other?

– The idea is that we will follow Stockholm’s district administration. When they merged Norrmalm and Östermalm, the idea is that we should try to reflect that.

Does it matter that Norrmalmspolisen as a concept ceases to exist – they even run as a TV series right now?

– I see it more as a natural part for Swedish police to develop further to meet the problems we see.

The new division comes into effect on January 1, 2025. LPO Norra innerstaden is moving out of the police station on Kungsholmen, they will probably end up somewhere in the city.

LPO Lidingö-Kungsholmen remains in the police station. At present, LPO Södermalm will not change.

– I am humbled by the fact that change can lead to certain concerns and questions among employees. On the whole, it has been received positively, but it is clear that there are concerns, individuals who wonder where they end up and so on. It is completely natural, says Felix Andåker.

Police organization in the inner city

Police area Stockholm city consists of Kungsholmen, Norrmalm, Östermalm and Lidingö.

City is divided into local police areas. Until now, there have been two: local police area Norrmalm, in which Lidingö was included, and Södermalm.

From 2025, there will be three: local police area Norra innerstaden, local police area Lidingö-Kungsholmen and local police area Södermalm.
