The Vatican announced on Thursday morning that Pope Francis experienced “mild improvement” in his overall condition, easing concerns about the 87-year-old pontiff’s health.

The Holy See reported, “The night was calm, this morning Pope Francis got up and had breakfast.” This positive update followed a medical bulletin released on Thursday afternoon confirming that the Pope was afebrile and his hemodynamic parameters remained stable.

Pneumonia Diagnosis and Treatment Modifications

While initially diagnosed with bronchitis, further examination revealed the Pope suffered from pneumonia in both lungs. This prompted a shift in treatment, necessitating the use of cortisone and antibiotics.

Despite the severity of the illness, Vatican officials assured the public that the Pope was regaining strength and maintaining his usual activities, albeit with some limitations.

Hospitalization and Public Response

This marks the fourth time the Pope has been admitted to the Gemelli Hospital in Rome. Previous hospitalizations in March and November 2023 were also due to respiratory issues, forcing him to cancel his trip to Dubai for the COP28 climate summit.

The news of Pope Francis’s hospitalization sparked a wave of global support from religious leaders, political figures, and faithful followers.

Italian President Sergio Mattarella conveyed his wishes for a speedy recovery, and Cardinal Matteo Zuppi, President of the Italian Episcopal Conference, sent his heartfelt message of support. Numerous other ecclesiastical representatives also offered their prayers and well-wishes.

Previous Health Challenges

Pope Francis has faced several health concerns in recent years. he underwent colon and hernia surgeries, and ongoing chronic knee pain necessitates the use of a wheelchair for mobility. His medical history also includes frequent bouts of flu and respiratory complications, exacerbated by childhood pleurisy, which resulted in the removal of part of a lung.

Humor amidst Illness

During his recent hospitalization, Pope Francis encountered Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. Responding to false rumors about his death circulating on social media,he quipped,“Someone prayed to go to Paradise, but God decided to leave me here,” as reported by sources.

He approached the social media speculation with his characteristic wit, stating, “I know there are people out there who say my time has arrived. They always call misfortune!”

Despite his illness, Pope Francis received Meloni with his usual warmth and a radiant smile, albeit with slightly labored breathing. He shared insights into his health status and the medical advice he received, acknowledging the need for rest and reduced workload.

The outpouring of global support demonstrates the profound impact he has had on millions worldwide.
