Dakar, March 11 (APS) – The new Minister of the Interior, Mouhamadou Makhtar Cissé, assured Monday that the services under his department will do their best for a good organization of the presidential election scheduled for March 24 with the ambition to “preserve the Senegalese exception”.

“We have no concerns because our country has a strong tradition of organizing elections. I am a soldier at heart who is ready to serve. We will preserve the Senegalese exception,” he assured.

Mr. Cissé was speaking during the handover ceremony with his predecessor Sidiki Kaba, promoted head of government.

“We will keep our heads straight and our heads held high. You have to be cold and only do what you have to do (…) we are senior civil servants fed on the milk of the Republic. I have always learned to serve,” continued the former Minister of the Budget and former general director of Senelec, the national electricity company.

Mouhamadou Makhtar Cissé, a former student of the Saint-Louis Military Prytanée, says he feels on his shoulders the weight of “the great responsibility” of leading a ministry that is “important and strategic for the smooth running of the country”.

“Acting on the destiny of the nation is an exhilarating mission. It is about public service, that is to say service to the public (…), we find ourselves at an important moment in the life of our country. But Senegal will continue after this election,” said the man who served as director general of customs and chief of staff of the President of the Republic.

He called on political actors to play appeasement. “We invite the different staffs to the field of ideas and programs. We must refrain from any violent remarks,” launched Mouhamadou Makhtar Cissé.

The new Minister of the Interior, doctor in law and political science, holds a master’s degree in public finance and management.

He also graduated from the National School of Administration and Magistracy, from which he graduated as a customs inspector.

“The democratic tradition in Senegal is to vote on Sunday and go about your business on Monday. Even if the pre-electoral period can be inflammatory,” reacted the outgoing Minister of the Interior, Sidiki Kaba.

Mr. Kaba, who became head of government following the last ministerial reshuffle, assured that “the electoral materials have already been broken up as well as the ballot papers”.
