New on Netflix: “The Umbrella Academy”: Caught in the wrong timeline

Having just returned from their apocalyptic excursion in the 1960s, the next apocalypse awaits the Hargreeves siblings in the present. Saving the world has created a time paradox. Vanya, who now becomes Viktor (Elliot Page), Luther (Tom Hopper), Diego (David Castañeda), Allison (Emmy Raver-Lampman), Klaus (Robert Sheehan) and Five (Aidan Gallagher) never existed in this timeline. The house is now home to her dead father, Reginald (Colm Feore), and her dead brother, Ben (Justin H. Min). With five other October 1, 1989 babies, i.e. people with super powers, they form the “Sparrow Academy”. The much more efficient, meaner variant of the Umbrellas.
But before the siblings can agree on what to do, it becomes clear that the end of the world is sticking to them like chewing gum. Because how does the time-space constellation react to people who shouldn’t exist? She implodes.

If “The Umbrella Academy” found her voice with the second season, she shifts up a gear for the third season. The show’s new setting, the Oblivion Hotel, between the Overlook, Grand Budapest Hotel and the Shandor, is a cornucopia of absurdities for the siblings. Page’s announced gender change creates a sensitive narrative thread regarding identity. Everyone must pull together, come to terms with the Sparrows and overcome personal losses. Because the clock is ticking. On Netflix.
