NEW ORLEANS — New Orleans Saints rookie running back Kendre Miller left Sunday’s preseason game against the Kansas City Chiefs with a knee injury, which could deal another hit to roster depth.

Saints coach Dennis Allen said Kendre Miller sprained a knee and will undergo further tests. Allen said he believes the injury is to his right knee, the same one he injured at the Fiesta Bowl in December. That injury kept Miller out until the start of training camp while he rehabbed during OTAs.

Miller left the field in the third quarter and went to the injury tent on the sideline before walking to the locker room. He did not return to the game.

The Saints will be shorthanded to start the season if they don’t sign another running back. Starter Alvin Kamara will miss the first three games because of a suspension for violating the NFL’s personal conduct policy. While Jamaal Williams will start in his place, Miller likely would have been his immediate backup.

The Saints welcomed free agent Kareem Hunt last week after Eno Benjamin tore his Achilles tendon in practice. Hunt visited the Saints staff in New Orleans, but left before practice. Hunt visited the Indianapolis Colts and the Minnesota Vikings, but has not signed with either team.

Rookie Ellis Merriweather is the only other running back available on the Saints’ roster behind Kamara and Williams, as the wide receiver used at the position, Kirk Merritt, is injured. Merriweather had nine carries for 24 yards and hauled two passes for 17 yards, including a 2-yard touchdown reception with 1:25 left on Sunday.

“He came in and ran the ball pretty well,” Allen explained of Merriweather after the match. “I thought he ran the ball very physically. He had a very good run that was called … but it was a good run.”
