“New Proposal for Long-Term Unemployed: Basic Job Requirement”

2023-04-27 16:25:38

With the approach of May 1, Labor and Workers’ Day, Conner Rousseau, president of Vooruit, has issued a proposal that makes his French-speaking counterpart, the PS, cringe.

Indeed, the president of the Flemish Socialist Party proposes that the long-term unemployed be forced to accept a “basic job” on pain of saying goodbye to their allowances.

Starting from a simple observation that 75,000 job offers remain unanswered in Flanders while it has 194,000 unemployed people, including 30,000 for more than 5 years, he recommends more active guidance from the employment organization, support from day 1, training within four months, job offers every month.

And if nothing moves in two years, accepting a so-called “basic” “job” becomes compulsory, at the risk of no longer receiving unemployment benefits.

Companies that hire job seekers would receive subsidies.
