Ben Sowter, Vice President of QS, comments: “It is important to recognize that Colombia has experienced a period of strong economic growth since the turn of the century. This was reinforced by the 2016 peace agreement between the government and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia. , which ended the longest civil war in the world”.

Sowter continues: “In parallel with prosperity and peace – as is often the case – higher education saw access improve and enrollment numbers rise. For example, Colombia’s gross tertiary enrollment rate doubled from 28 percent in 2004 to 55 percent in 2018. Meanwhile, the number of higher education graduates rose from 65,720 in 2002 to 482,122 in 2018.”

Finally, he adds: “Yet Colombian investment in higher education has been historically low. An issue that reached its peak in 2018 with protests and an emergency budget supplement to combat a US $5.7 billion shortfall in university spending. Now, with the presidential elections imminent, it is essential -whatever the result- that the government prioritizes the provision of resources to its universities”.
