Initially, id Software developed Doom 4, which was inspired by the Call of Duty and Killzone games. Subsequently, the studio abandoned the idea, so they canceled the shooter and released Doom (2016).
The game takes place on Earth. The forces of Hell decided to take over the planet, and a resistance was formed to repel them. The screenshots just show two fighters in protective gear.
The shooter really deviated too much from the canons of the series, so the developers decided to reconsider their vision for the game.
