Biju Kumar noted that the living specimen was captured on camera at a depth of roughly 15 meters on rocky reefs off Anchuthengu as part of the ongoing Ecomarine project.

In naming the new species, the research team chose to honor a towering figure in global marine conservation. Hippocampus amandavincentae takes its name from Amanda Vincent, a noted marine biologist who pioneered seahorse conservation and founded Project Seahorse. Vincent’s early work laid the scientific groundwork for understanding seahorse vulnerability, making the tribute a fitting nod to decades of advocacy.

This addition brings the official count of seahorse species documented off the Kerala coast to five. As coastal habitats face mounting pressures from overfishing, habitat degradation, and climate shifts, accurate taxonomy serves as the bedrock for any meaningful conservation policy.
