New strain of HIV discovered in Cyprus

Scientists from the University of Cyprus have identified a new recombinant strain of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) type 1 in Cyprus. This was reported on Wednesday by the newspaper Phileleftheros.

The strain was named CRF91_cpx. It was discovered at the Los Alamos National Laboratory in the United States, where Cypriot scientists conducted research. In the further study of the virus, specialists from the clinic in Larnaca, which is engaged in the study and treatment of AIDS, took part.

A new subtype of HIV was detected in 14 residents of Cyprus. The newspaper writes that the virus circulates mainly among gays. There are suggestions that it may continue to spread on the island. At the same time, scientists have not yet accurately established all the clinical manifestations that may be in those infected with this strain.
