The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) announced Thursday that it is experimenting with the use of aerial and satellite hyperspectral imagery to locate the remains of missing persons.
This new state-of-the-art technology notably makes it possible to identify places where the remains of missing persons may have been buried at a shallow depth or may have been left behind.
According to the results of controlled trials conducted in partnership with the National Research Council Canada, this technology might better detect signs of the presence of decomposing bodies and shallow graves.
“With this new initiative, the RCMP is taking a first step towards exploring technological potential, such as hyperspectral scanning and satellite technology,” said Chief Superintendent Gordon Sage, Director General of Specialized and Sensitive Investigation Services.
Each year, some 62,000 people go missing and 40 unidentified human remains are discovered across Canada.
