This was confirmed by Amazon spokesman Eric Sveum across from The Verge He said they plan to expand the feature and “consider offerings wherever there are local news channels.”
How the Amazon Echo Show feature works
A test of the portal shows what to expect from the function. Originally, asking about the weather caused the screen to show the usual forecast and current weather conditions, and Alexa to read the information. The new feature has thumbnail videos at the bottom with local forecasts from multiple news channels.
The videos will not play automatically. Users must actively tap to view it. It opens in full-screen mode and begins with the short conversation between the newscaster and the meteorologist before the forecast begins. With some videos, however, it was not immediately clear when the video came from. A timestamp is still missing here, according to The Verge.
Users can also check the weather without speaking by tapping the Alexa weather widget, which brings up the same information screen. But without the videos.
