New Wine Bottle Labeling: Transparency Revolution or Consumer Burden?

2023-12-17 18:51:15

Change to wine bottle labels. Since December 8, they must, as with all other foods, include the complete list of ingredients. But the wine sector has already managed to get this information put into the form of a QR code. So is this new transparency really a revolution for consumers?

In one of the largest wine estates in Wallonia, Hubert Ewbak, owner of Domaine du chant d’Eole and general administrator of the Association of Walloon Winegrowers, produces red and white and rosé wines on a large scale. For him, the new labeling with a complete list of ingredients goes in the right direction, at least for transparency. But it won’t be easy for everyone. “There are two types of winegrowers, small enthusiasts who only have a few acres and those who have a larger house, and they will be able to pass it on more easily given the volume. They are more structured, more organized“, he explains. “On the other hand, for small houses, these are additional analyzes to be carried out on each lot, it is still quite expensive. And so unfortunately, it will be the end consumer, as usual, who will have to pay this bill“.

Wine was the only food product that escaped the rule.
