The night of the new year is generally a more complicated evening than others for the emergency and police services. In Brussels, firefighters were attacked and the number of offenses is up compared to 2022. In Walloon Brabant, fewer offenses than last year, but still 382 misdeeds noted. Among them, 62 offenses for the use (prohibited unless authorized by the mayor) of fireworks or firecrackers.
Despite everything, the situation is described as “normal” by the governor’s services. For Christophe Baes, district commissioner and interim governor, the night went “overall well and for a night with difficult weather, people were careful”.

Two police cars on fire
Two local police cars from the Orne-Thyle area were set on fire in the parking lot of the Chastre town hall. The flames from the first vehicle quickly spread to the second parked next door. Quickly arriving on site, firefighters were able to bring the fire under control. In addition to this fire, four other interventions were carried out, for boxes of fireworks in Nivelles and in a meadow in Chastre, a garden pallet in Braine-l’Alleud and even clothing bubbles.
The Brabant relief zone carried out no fewer than 31 urgent medical aid missions, including 12 outside the borders of the Young Province.
The emergency services are also involved in an incident on the Ring from Brussels to Waterloo between exits 26 and 27. A motorcyclist and his passenger fell from the bridge crossing the Ring, and ended up on the motorway. The driver died and his passenger was taken to hospital.

Brick on a young woman and fireworks on police suits and knife attack
The police forces from different areas of Walloon Brabant also had to intervene on several occasions for fireworks or firecrackers. On three occasions, the shots were directly aimed at police officers in the Orne-Thyle areas (Chastre, Mont-Saint-Guibert, Villers, etc.), Wavre and Ottignies-Louvain-la-Neuve.
The university campus has also witnessed several fights around the Grand-Place, where local residents and students gathered. During one of them, a young woman was hit by a brick which had ricocheted off a wall. During another scuffle, on rue Paulin Ladeuze, two people were arrested and deprived of their liberty.
In the Brabant capital, several events are also worth noting, such as a knife attack on the Bierges motorway area. A drunk man allegedly attacked truckers. He was intercepted by the police and the knife was found. Other facts reported: an argument between an alcoholic couple, and a man walking around naked after taking drugs.
