New York fire: 17 killed, including 8 children, from suffocation

NEW YORK: At least 17 people, including eight children, have been killed in the largest fire in New York City in three decades. 43 people are in hospital with burns, 13 of them in critical condition. The first reports were that 19 people had died, including 9 children.

The fire broke out due to a fault in the electric heater in the third floor apartment of the building where about 200 people were staying. Smoke billowed from the 19-story building as residents fled without closing the room. The siren sounded, but many could not escape due to heavy smoke. Many died of asphyxiation due to heavy smoke.
