Games Workshop has launched four new Event Companion documents for the 11th edition of Warhammer 40,000, detailing updated rules for tournaments, team events, and narrative campaigns. The developer also announced a shift to monthly balance updates for the first three months of the new edition, beginning in late July to address potential volatility.
New Event Companion Documentation Structure
The transition to the 11th edition introduces a change in how organized play is managed. Previously, Games Workshop utilized a single master document for events, but the publisher has now split these instructions into four specific Event Companion documents. These files provide guidance for organizers on mission sequences, pairing systems, and ranking management.

The primary document serves as a baseline for all events, incorporating an updated list of base sizes for every unit in the game and recommendations for terrain layouts. Notably, the new rules dictate that players must now position their terrain after being paired with an opponent. While this change is intended to add strategic depth, organizers are being advised to allocate additional time between rounds to account for the setup process.
Doubles Events and 1,000-Point Army Constraints
Doubles tournaments, which feature two-player teams, have received official support in the new edition. The Doubles Tournament Companion clarifies several common rules interactions, specifically prohibiting teams from gaining extra command points or allowing units to embark in vehicles belonging to an ally’s army.

The studio also addressed community concerns regarding army construction at the 1,000-point level. Players had questioned whether they could utilize a 3 Detachment Point (3DP) detachment as their only force in smaller games. According to Warhammer Community, the intent is to allow this configuration regardless of mission size.

An update to the Muster Army rules is expected shortly after launch to formally clarify this provision.
Monthly Balance Adjustments and App Integration
To mitigate the impact of unforeseen balance issues during the launch window, the studio rules team has committed to a more aggressive update schedule. While standard balance passes will remain quarterly, the game will receive monthly updates for the first three months of the 11th edition. The first of these course corrections is scheduled for the end of July.
The digital experience is also evolving. The official Warhammer 40,000 app will be updated this Wednesday to include the new mission layouts, supporting players as they prepare their lists. While physical rulebooks remain available for those who prefer them, TheGamer notes that the full rules are available for free on the official website. This approach avoids the requirement to purchase the new Armageddon box, though some players may find the physical book more convenient for active play.
Team Event Logistics and Force Disposition
Team events in the 11th edition introduce a specific restriction on army selection: for every five players, only one may select a particular Force Disposition. This requires teams to coordinate their playstyles to ensure a diverse set of capabilities across the roster.

The pairing process for these events has also been refined. Teams now secretly select one Defender and two Attackers. Once revealed, the opposing team chooses which Attacker their Defender will face, and the Defender determines the mission layout. This system is designed to create a more competitive environment, with specific adjustments outlined in the Teams Event Companion for varying team sizes.
As players begin testing these rules, some have noted that the core gameplay remains familiar, with fewer drastic overhauls than in previous editions. However, as one reviewer observed, the cost of entry for physical materials remains a factor for some collectors.

Looking ahead, the community is focused on how these rules will influence competitive meta-gameplay. With the first balance update arriving in July, the immediate period following the launch is expected to be highly fluid as the rules team monitors player feedback and tournament performance.
