The Newark Ohio Pride Coalition has rebranded as SPARC to support rural LGBTQ+ communities in Ohio, aiming to connect and sustain local Pride events, according to a press release from the organization. The rebranding, announced in late 2023, reflects a strategic shift to address gaps in resources for LGBTQ+ individuals in underserved areas of the state.
SPARC, which stands for “Sustaining Pride and Advocacy in Rural Communities,” was formed after a 2022 survey by the Ohio LGBTQ+ Chamber of Commerce found that 68% of rural LGBTQ+ residents lacked access to consistent Pride programming. The organization’s leadership cited this data as a catalyst for the rebranding, emphasizing the need for “localized, community-driven solutions” to foster inclusivity.
Rebranding as a Strategic Move
The Newark Ohio Pride Coalition, which previously organized events in Newark, Ohio, and surrounding areas, transitioned to SPARC to expand its reach. “Our goal is to empower grassroots efforts in rural regions where LGBTQ+ individuals often face isolation,” said SPARC spokesperson Jamie Linwood in an interview with Ohio LGBTQ+ News. “This rebranding allows us to focus on creating networks rather than singular events.”
The organization’s new website, sparc-ohio.org, outlines initiatives such as funding grants for rural Pride groups, mentorship programs, and a digital platform for sharing resources. SPARC also plans to host annual regional summits to strengthen collaboration among local organizers.
Impact on Rural Communities
Since the rebranding, SPARC has partnered with seven rural Pride groups, including the Columbus Pride Alliance and the Cincinnati LGBTQ+ Coalition. These partnerships have led to the launch of new events, such as the “Rural Pride Festival” in Mansfield, Ohio, which drew over 1,200 attendees in August 2024, according to The Mansfield News.
Community leaders highlight the importance of these efforts. “In rural areas, visibility is everything,” said Marcus Reyes, a volunteer with the Mansfield Pride Festival. “SPARC provides the tools and connections we need to keep our community safe and visible.”
However, challenges remain. A 2023 report by the Human Rights Campaign noted that rural LGBTQ+ individuals are 30% more likely to experience discrimination than their urban counterparts. SPARC’s focus on grassroots engagement is seen as a critical step in addressing these disparities.
What Comes Next
SPARC plans to expand its funding initiatives in 2025, with a target of supporting 20 rural Pride groups across Ohio. The organization also aims to launch a statewide LGBTQ+ youth mentorship program, pending approval from the Ohio Department of Education.
For now, SPARC’s work underscores a growing trend in LGBTQ+ advocacy: prioritizing localized solutions to bridge gaps in representation and support. As Linwood stated, “Our strength lies in the communities we serve. By amplifying their voices, we create lasting change.”
