Newly updated vaccine cuts the risk of contracting Covid-19 by half

The latest research from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) shows that updated vaccines have the ability to halve the risk of disease caused by Covid-19.

According to research by the US CDC, updated vaccines have the ability to protect against new variants of Omicron including XBB.1.5, which is spreading rapidly today. These vaccines have the potential to halve the risk of illness from Covid-19 and are more effective in younger people.

The additional shots were updated last summer to be able to fight the BA.4 and BA.5 variants of Omicron, in addition to the original strain first detected in Wuhan, China in 2019. BA.5 was once the dominant strain in the US this past fall, however, this variant now accounts for only 2% of all new infections in the US. Only 15% of people in the US have received a booster shot of the Covid-19 vaccine so far.
