Public demand for racket sports infrastructure in Singapore has driven a new land-use initiative, with a 1,400-square-meter indoor air-conditioned sports facility featuring five pickleball courts and four padel courts slated to open beside the Newton MRT station by the end of the first quarter or early in the second quarter of next year, zaobao.com.sg reported.
Breaking Ground at Newton MRT
The project, branded as TSA @ Newton, held its start-of-construction ceremony on Saturday, November 7. The facility is a collaborative effort between the Land Transport Authority (LTA), SMRT, and private sports operator The Sports Arina (TSA), designed to utilize idle land surrounding transit hubs to expand urban athletic space.
Guest of honour Chua Sheng Hui, Minister of State in the Ministry of National Development and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, joined LTA representatives, SMRT Group President Shen Weiming, and TSA founder Chen Biliang to officiate the ceremony. Chua, who serves as the Member of Parliament for Tanjong Pagar GRC overseeing grassroots affairs in Moulmein-Cairnhill, confirmed that residents in the immediate district will receive priority booking rights and exclusive discounted pricing.

Reviving the Farrer Park Athletic Heritage
Speaking at the launch, Chua highlighted that the new venue forms a critical component of a broader municipal strategy to return sporting culture to the Farrer Park area. According to National Library Board historical records, Farrer Park served as a vital sporting cradle for Singapore from the 1950s through the 1980s. The historic zone once housed football fields, running tracks, swimming pools, and tennis courts before land gave way to subsequent mass rapid transit lines and residential housing developments.
“We have always wanted to bring sports back to the community,” Chua stated, noting that integrating athletic zones into transit-adjacent empty plots delivers direct utility to local residents through targeted incentives.
SMRT Transforms Stations into Community and Lifestyle Destinations
For SMRT, the collaboration marks another step in transforming transit stations from pure transit nodes into dedicated community and lifestyle destinations. Shen Weiming explained that the rail operator is progressively rolling out themed “villages” with distinct characteristics around its stations. Existing and planned concepts include a recreational village at the Downtown Line’s Tampines Station, a digital village planned for Punggol Coast Station, and an upcoming arts-themed enclave.
The Newton station site represents an attempt to create a “sports village” for the network. With the rapid surge in local popularity for both pickleball and padel, demand for courts has grown accordingly. Chen Biliang noted that preliminary talks with SMRT began earlier, but the concept was not yet concrete, and the project gained clearer momentum around October last year, with Chua driving it forward. TSA currently operates an integrated sports complex along Jalan Kayu featuring pickleball, padel, and badminton, alongside dedicated courts at the Singapore Expo.
