Calvin Pickard hadn’t gotten a start in the NHL in 22 months and his return was tough against the Florida Panthers, who beat the Edmonton Oilers 5-3.
In his last start, in a Detroit Red Wings uniform, Pickard made 36 saves in a shootout victory against the Pittsburgh Penguins on January 28, 2022.
On Monday, he was unable to perform a miracle against the third best team in the East to temper the difficult start to the season for the Oilers, who lost a second game in a row. They are 2-2 since Kris Knoblauch took over the team on November 12.
Connor McDavid scored two goals in the loss, including one on a penalty shot. No. 97 launched his team forward after 5:59, followed by Evander Kane.
McDavid made it 3-2 in the second period after being caught by Gustav Forsling on a breakaway. He veered wide to his right before returning to the center to beat Sergei Bobrovsky on the blocker side and score his third career goal on a penalty shot, an organization record.
The Panthers, however, came from behind for a second time in the meeting. Only a minute later, Nikko Mikkola also scored twice to tie the game again.
Kevin Stenlund then broke the deadlock.
Pickard still remained in the game in the third period and he tried to keep his team in the game by stopping Evan Rodrigues, who was running alone in front of him, but Bobrovsky closed the door on the other side. Both blocked 28 shots.
Sam Bennett finally put the game out of reach by scoring into an empty net, good for his first goal of the season.
Quinn Hughes isn’t intimidated by Prince Harry
In front of British royalty, Quinn Hughes scored a goal and an assist as the Vancouver Canucks defeated the San Jose Sharks 3-1 on Monday night.
Before the match, Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, took the ceremonial puck drop as part of preparations for the 2025 Invictus Games.
Hughes (8-22) is the first NHL player to reach 30 points this season. He is the first defenseman since Bobby Orr in 1974-75 to be the first skater in the league to reach this mark.
JT Miller and Sam Lafferty scored the other Canucks goals. Thatcher Demko was only beaten by Tomas Hertl in victory. He stopped 27 shots.
MacKenzie Blackwood limited the damage by making 37 saves. The Canucks massacred the Sharks 10 to 1 in the first meeting between the two teams this season.
Hockey, popular in the royal family
His grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, dropped the puck during a game between the two teams 21 years ago.
Harry is the founder and patron of the Invictus Games Foundation, which runs the international multi-sport event for injured and ill military personnel.
Harry attended the match alongside his wife Meghan Markle, local Indigenous leaders, Prime Minister David Eby and Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture and Sport Lana Popham.

The Avalanche spoils the victory in 16 short seconds
Filip Forsberg and Yakov Trenin scored two goals in a span of 16 seconds in the final minute of play and the Nashville Predators escaped with a 4-3 victory over the Colorado Avalanche.
Forsberg first tied the game 3-3 with 38 seconds left in the game by jumping on a return shot at the mouth of the net. Trenin then threw a shower of cold water on the Avalanche players by scoring the decisive goal 16 seconds later.
The Swedish Predators forward also added another goal in the first period. After suffering a concussion last season, Forsberg was limited to just 50 games. Back in perfect health, Forsberg now has 21 points in 17 games this season. Quebecer Jérémy Lauzon took advantage of this visit from the Avalanche to score his first goal of the season.
In the defeat, Cale Makar participated in all three of his team’s goals in this match. The star defenseman became the 12th defender in history to collect at least three points in three different games in the same season. Makar achieved the feat in just 17 small meetings.
Valeri Nichuskin had a goal and an assist, while Nathan MacKinnon was involved in two goals from his teammates. Andrew Cogliano and Devon Toews were the other scorers in the Avalanche camp.
Juuse Saros stopped 25 pucks to end a five-game losing streak. The Finn had not tasted victory since October 28. Alexandar Georgiev made 26 saves.
The Stars bring the Rangers back to earth
Roope Hintz led the charge with three points and the Dallas Stars defeated the New York Rangers 6-3 in a duel between two NHL powers. New York had collected at least one point in its last 11 outings.
Joe Pavelski, Mason Marchment and Tyler Seguin all had a goal and an assist in this duel.
The Rangers took a 2-0 lead thanks to goals from Vincent Trocheck and Kaapo Kakko. Jamie Benn scored the Stars late in the second to cut the lead to one goal.
Dallas then exploded with five unanswered goals in the final third. With a 4-2 lead, however, Sam Steel and Hintz put the game out of reach for the Rangers with empty-net goals. Barclay Goodrow scored with 16 seconds left in the game to make it 6-3 in favor of the Stars.
Scott Wedgewood signed the victory by stopping 30 pucks. Igor Shesterkin also made 30 saves, but gave in four times to the Texan attack.
For the Rangers, Artemi Panarin did not register his name on the scoresheet for the first time this season, having obtained at least one point in his team’s first 15 games, a Rangers record to start a season.
The Stars took advantage of this game to announce that Mike Modano would be honored near the American Airlines Center. A statue of the team’s former star will be unveiled on March 16. Modano will join Dallas Mavericks legend Dirk Nowitzki, who also has a statue of him in front of the AAC.
The Kings are still masters abroad
Trevor Moore scored twice and the Los Angeles Kings earned their eighth straight road victory by defeating the Arizona Coyotes 4-1.
The Californian team became the fourth team in history to win its first eight games of the season on opposing rinks. The Buffalo Sabers (10) in 2006-07, the New Jersey Devils (9) in 2009-10 and the Predators (8) in 2018-19 are the other three teams to achieve the feat.
Anze Kopitar and Philipp Danault scored the Kings’ other two goals. Pheonix Copley was solid in front of the Kings cage with a 29 save performance.
Lawson Crouse was the only one to beat Copley by scoring his 4th goal of the season. Connor Ingram suffered the loss making only 21 saves.
Drew Doughty passed Dave Taylor for third place in team history by playing in his 1,112th game with the Kings. Kopitar (1308) and Dustin Brown (1296) are in front of him.
Huberdeau continues his momentum in Seattle
Jonathan Huberdeau scored for his fourth point in three games and the Calgary Flames rallied late in the third to beat the Seattle Kraken 4-3 in overtime.
Andrew Mangiapane tied the game with 4:07 left in regulation and Rasmus Andersson scored the game-winner for the Flames.
Mangiapane scored on a return to beat Joey Daccord. In overtime, Andersson saw his shot stopped by Daccord when he rounded the net, but the defender recovered his return to thread the needle.
Elias Lindholm scored his fourth goal of the season 1:16 into the game and Huberdeau scored on the power play midway through the first period.
Dan Vladar stopped 28 shots for the Flames, who have won three of their last four games. The team has won all six games against the Kraken so far.
Jordan Eberle and Jared McCann scored 2:04 apart in the second period to give the Kraken a 3-2 lead.
Daccord entered the game early in the second period and stopped 22 shots.
Philipp Grubauer started the game, stopping five of seven shots, but was on the team’s bench for the start of the second period. Grubauer was the victim of a heavy collision with Flames player Martin Pospisil at the start of the first period.
