NHL Faces Backlash for Banning LGBTQ+ Representation on Jerseys and Equipment

A few months following banning rainbow-colored jerseys for pride evenings organized by teams, the National Hockey League (NHL) added a layer by banning the multi-colored ribbon.

The site outsports.com indicated Monday that several clarification memos had been sent to Bettman circuit teams regarding pieces of equipment representing the LGBTQ+ community. Thus, the protective tape for the sticks, which was never compulsory, was also included on the blacklist.

This new decision aroused the ire of several Internet users on social networks. Some believe that the NHL has ruined all the progress made by the LGBTQ+ community in a few months.

Last year, several players refused to wear the special uniform due to their religious beliefs. Russians in particular feared the possible response from Vladimir Putin’s regime. Eric and Marc Staal, Ivan Provorov and Denis Gurianov are among those who did not take part in warm-ups in order to avoid the pride jersey.
