Auston Matthews has often been the talk of Toronto Maple Leafs games this season, but it was Ryan Reaves and Matt Rempe who grabbed the headlines in a 4-3 shootout victory for the Leafs over the Rangers from New York, Saturday evening.

After coming up against Matt Martin, Nicolas Deslauriers and Mathieu Olivier in furious battles during his first five games in the NHL, rookie Rempe took on the colossus Reaves.

With just under six minutes remaining in the third period and with the Rangers trailing 3-2, the two men engaged in a waltz lasting more than 50 seconds, each of them letting go a few good punches. Reaves had invited Rempe earlier in the match, but the latter declined the invitation.

In his first game in a Maple Leafs uniform, defenseman Ilya Lyubushkin, acquired from the Anaheim Ducks, left the game due to a head injury after taking a hit from Rempe.

After the game, head coach Sheldon Keefe lamented that Rempe “left contact with the ice” to hit his player.

The match was finally decided by a shootout goal from former Montreal Canadiens Max Domi. Mitch Marner, William Nylander and John Tavares scored for Toronto in regulation.

Quebecer Alexis Lafrenière had an excellent match with a goal and two assists. He contributed to all of Rangers’ goals. After opening the scoring with a superb wrist shot in the first period, Lafrenière had the opportunity to play the hero during the third round of the shootout. However, he was frustrated by Ilya Samsonov and Domi scored moments later.

Vincent Trocheck scored the Rangers’ other two goals. He notably scored the tying goal with 1:07 remaining in the third period, taking advantage of a rebound.

Since their ten-game winning streak, the Rangers have lost two of their three games. For the Maple Leafs, this is a ninth victory in their last ten games.

In front of the Rangers cage, Igor Shesterkin gave up three times on 34 shots. He had won each of his last seven starts. At the other end of the ice, Samsonov blocked 32 pucks.

The Maple Leafs will return to action Monday night against the Boston Bruins, while the Rangers will face the Florida Panthers.

Kiprusoff’s jersey retirement inspires the Flames

The Pittsburgh Penguins thought they could spoil Miikka Kiprusoff’s night in Calgary, but an unanswered three-goal surge by the Flames in the third period allowed them to escape with a 4-3 victory.

The former goalkeeper saw his number 34 retired by the Flames, with whom he obtained 305 victories, including 41 shutouts, in 576 games. When he retired in 2012-13, Kiprusoff led the Flames in goals-against average of 2.46 and save percentage of .913.

A few of Kiprusoff’s former teammates, including Jarome Iginla, were on hand.

“I don’t think I need to tell you what a fantastic player Iginla was. I think the only thing he didn’t do was score against me in practice, Kiprusoff laughed in his speech. Sincerely Iggy, it’s a huge honor to have my name up there alongside yours. »

Kirpusoff played nine seasons in Calgary with the Flames and notably won the Vezina Trophy in 2005-2006.

“It was nine years that went by too quickly, but they were the best nine years of my life. My family and I will remember this for the rest of our lives, thank you. »

In the match, Yegor Sharangovich played the hero with the winning goal in the last minute of play with his second goal of the match. Nazem Kadri and Blake Coleman also hit the target.

On Saturday night, the Penguins held a 3-1 lead midway through the third period thanks to goals from Jonathan Gruden, Lars Eller and Jeff Carter.

Calgary, however, revived hopes of victory with two goals in the space of 32 seconds. Kadri set the tone with a spectacular individual sequence during which he served up some brilliant feints to the Penguins players. Moments later, Coleman tied the game 3-3.

While the deadlock still held in the last minute of the third period, Mikael Backlund took the puck from Kristopher Letang in the opposing zone, before putting the puck behind him for Sharangovich. A good wrist shot into the top of the net allowed him to break the tie.

In front of the Flames net and under the eyes of Kirpusoff, goaltender Jacob Markstrom blocked 27 pucks. His opposite number Tristan Jarry allowed four goals on 20 shots.

Cozens hits shorthanded Sabers twice

Dylan Cozens scored twice shorthanded, helping the Buffalo Sabers win 7-2 against the Vegas Golden Knights.

He first won his race for the puck in the neutral zone before escaping to make it 2-0, then he collected his own rebound to score with a backhand late in the game to complete the score.

The Sabers led 3-2 after 40 minutes, before completely dominating the third period.

They headed towards a fifth victory in six games.

Zemgus Girgensons, Jeff Skinner, Casey Mittelstadt, Owen Power and Kyle Okposo were the other scorers for the Sabres. Power and Skinner also added an assist each.

Author of 22 saves, Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen was beaten by Brendan Brisson and William Karlsson.

Logan Thompson blocked 28 shots for Vegas, which is 2-6-1 through nine games.

The Sabers will host the Winnipeg Jets on Sunday night.

Palmieri at the heart of the Bruins’ woes

A hat trick from Kyle Palmieri allowed the New York Islanders to enjoy a third straight victory, by a score of 5-1 against the Bruins, in addition to inflicting a fourth defeat on Boston in their last five games.

Palmieri scored all three of his goals in a span of eight minutes and 47 seconds to give the Islanders a 3-0 lead in the first period. Palmieri finished the game with four points, to tie the best performance of his career.

It was a third career hat-trick for Palmieri, a Long Island native.

Anders Lee and Brock Nelson scored the Rangers’ other two goals in the second period.

Marc McLaughlin was the only scorer for the Bruins with just under six minutes remaining in the middle period. Ilya Sorokin blocked the Islanders’ other 22 shots he faced.

In the Boston cage, Linus Ullmark had a difficult evening of work and he allowed five goals on 26 shots.

The Stars overcome the Sharks

The San Jose Sharks offered good opposition to the Dallas Stars, who still found a way to defeat the Sharks by a score of 3-2 in a shootout.

The Sharks blew slim one-goal leads twice in the game, before finally giving in for good in the shootout.

The Stars are 6-0-2 in their last eight home games.

Jamie Benn played the hero with a goal in the seventh round of the session. Benn served a superb fake to goaltender Magnus Chrona, before slipping the puck into the back of the net as he fell.

Chrona did well despite everything with a performance of 36 saves. However, he was unable to get the first victory of his NHL career. At the other end of the ice, Jake Oettinger blocked 21 pucks.

Radek Faksa scored for the Stars, while Jason Robertson tied the game 2-2 in the third period with his 21st goal of the season. William Eklund and Filip Zadina were the Sharks’ scorers.

Columbus s’offre les Blackhawks

Alexandre Texier scored in the first minute of the game, Zach Werenski had two assists and the Columbus Blue Jackets beat the Chicago Blackhawks 5-2 on Saturday.

Boone Jenner, Mathieu Olivier, Cole Sillinger and Johnny Gaudreau scored the other goals for the Blue Jackets.

Elvis Merzlikins stopped 26 shots, as did Arvid Soderblom.

Philipp Kurashev and Ryan Donato responded for the Hawks, who are 0-4-2 in their last six games.

Texier opened the scoring after 33 seconds, taking advantage of a blunder by defender Seth Jones in his territory, then Jenner made it 2-0 later in the first period.

Kurashev scored with 2:28 left in the period to close the gap. Werenski made it 3-1 early in the second period and Sillinger added another goal for his team midway through the period.

Soderblom lost a 14th straight game.
