Nicholas Hoult is only 32 years old. However, he already has twenty years of career behind him. In “The Menu”, a thriller playing in a gourmet restaurant on our screens from November 23, he shares the poster with Anya Taylor-Joy and Ralph Fiennes.

In this film, you form a couple with Anya Taylor-Joy, who travels to a remote island for a surprising dinner…

Yes. There are so many elements that attracted me to this screenplay, starting with the director, Mark Mylod, who signs the “Succession” series, which I love. The plot is surprising, sometimes frightening, often funny and original. It is full of twists.

Your character is strange to say the least. Why?

Because on screen I like to be unpredictable. You never know how he will react, and it’s perfect to keep the viewer in suspense. I also loved the preparation of the film, because we rehearsed, as if it were a play, while being able to improvise. We spent weeks in this dining room with comedians who were really intimidating when cooking.

Your son, Joaquim, is 4 years old and you will soon be 33. What is your state of mind?

There is nothing that makes me happier than being at home with my family and my son. Like all working parents, my goal is to find my balance between private life and work. I shoot, I work, I promote my films, but my absolute priority is to be out of sight with those I love.

How did you find this balance?

I started very young in comedy since, at 12, I was in “For a boy”, with Hugh Grant. This film made me known to the general public. I always felt privileged, because I grew up with a lot of love, mainly surrounded by women. My mother and my sisters are the ones who helped me to become a man. Very early, I learned dance and theatre. I feel more comfortable in a feminine universe than surrounded by testosterone! (Laugh.)

You will also find Nicolas Cage in 2023, who will play Dracula in “Renfield”. Exact?

Yes. This will be very different from the “Menu”, because I will play RM Renfield, a man interned in an asylum who is believed to be insane when he is Dracula’s servant. Finding Nicolas Cage is a joy. He’s one of the first great Hollywood actors I worked with, when I was 14, in “The Weather Man.” I remember a kind and caring guy who took me under his wing.
