Nigeria-Morocco gas pipeline: Morocco contributes financially to pre-project studies

Thanks to a loan of 14.3 million dollars (approximately 115 million DH), granted by the OPEC Fund for International Development (OPEC Fund) to ONHYM, Morocco is contributing to the financing of the second phase of the detailed preliminary study (FEED-Front-End engineering design) of the gas pipeline which will link the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Kingdom of Morocco (NMGP project). The signing of the legal documentation relating to this financing took place on Friday.

The Nigeria-Morocco gas pipeline project is progressing slowly but surely. After having awarded, last week, the market for the realization of the engineering study and preliminary design of the pipeline project – to be built over more than 7,000 km – to the Australian company Worley, the two partners had to put your hand in your pocket to finance the operation.

This is what the Moroccan government has just tackled. Thanks to a loan of 14.3 million dollars (approximately 115 million DH), granted by the OPEC Fund for International Development (OPEC Fund) to ONHYM, the Kingdom is thus contributing to the financing of the second phase of the detailed preliminary design study (FEED-Front-End engineering design) for this gas pipeline (NMGP Project).

The signing of the legal documentation relating to this financing took place last Friday, by exchange of correspondence, between Nadia Fettah, the Minister of Economy and Finance, Abdulhamid Al khalifa, Director General of the OPEC FUND and Amina Benkhadra , Director General of ONHYM.

A contribution of $14.3 million

The study, co-financed with the Islamic Development Bank (IDB), concerns the preparation of documentation relating to the execution of the Nigeria-Morocco Gas Pipeline project and the finalization of the related technical, financial and legal analyses.

It has been entrusted to the Australian engineering company Worley which, to carry out this large-scale project, which is to link Nigeria to Morocco over 7,000 km, across the western coast of the African continent crossing 11 countries, will mobilize the all of this expertise around the world.

Thus, Worley’s Intecsea unit, which focuses on offshore engineering consultancy, will manage the study from The Hague. The Worley team in London will take care of the onshore study, in addition to the environmental and social impact assessment and land acquisition studies.

The company’s offices in Africa and the delivery team in Hyderabad, India will also contribute. Without forgetting Worley’s Advisian, which will work on the analysis of the electrification and energy self-sufficiency of the region.

A regional economic integration project

In short, let’s go for a project that will be a real catalyst for economic development in the North West region of Africa. Indeed, the strategic project of the Nigeria Morocco gas pipeline, initiated by the King and President Buhari, and whose cooperation agreement was signed in May 2017, aims to be a catalyst for the economic development of this region.

It has a strong desire to integrate and improve the competitiveness and economic and social development of the countries concerned, through the acceleration of their electrification and their energy autonomy; support for the development and improvement of the living conditions of local populations; revitalization of the regional economy through the development of job-creating sectors; and the reduction of gas “flaring” as well as the use of reliable and sustainable energy.
