Ukrainian forces targeted the Krasnodar region port city of Novorossiysk with a coordinated barrage of anti-ship missiles, jet-powered aerial drones, and sea drones in a nighttime operation described by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy as a unique strike against the final major stronghold of the Russian fleet in the Black Sea.
The operation impacted air defenses, piers, and regional port infrastructure. Krasnodar region Governor Veniamin Kondratyev reported that hundreds of drones struck Novorossiysk, Anapa, Gelendzhik, and the Temryuk district overnight. Russian air defenses intercepted more than 500 drones across the region, according to the Defense Ministry in Moscow.
The strikes caused civilian casualties and material damage across southern Russia. An eight-year-old child died in Novorossiysk, while a man succumbed to his injuries in the hospital after his home in the Temryuk district was hit. Governor Kondratyev confirmed that 12 other residents sustained injuries and debris fell across four industrial plants and 21 residential buildings.
Across the Kerch Strait in illegally annexed Crimea, Russian-appointed Sevastopol head Mikhail Razvozhayev reported that air defenses intercepted 115 drones, damaging 10 apartment buildings and 25 private houses.
Energy Infrastructure and Economic Toll Under Scrutiny
Novorossiysk houses the Grushovaya oil transshipment complex, one of southern Russia’s largest hubs for petroleum products and a key international oil terminal. The facility feeds the Caspian Pipeline Consortium pipeline, which exports crude from major Kazakh fields involving U.S. energy companies Chevron and ExxonMobil. The U.S. State Department previously expressed concern over Ukrainian strikes in the area due to their impact on these energy interests.
Beyond the naval base, the broader campaign has expanded deep into Russian territory. Ukrainian drones previously reached the Omsk refinery in Siberia, located approximately 2,700 kilometers from Ukrainian-controlled territory, utilizing an upgraded drone design. These strikes have accumulated across major Russian refineries, oil terminals, and fuel storage facilities, exposing vulnerabilities in Russia’s domestic air defense network.
The economic fallout has also hit domestic commerce. Russian media outlets have documented severe disruptions at major logistics hubs operated by Wildberries and Ozon, where small-business vendors selling clothing and electronics reported losing years of work and their primary livelihoods. Pro-war military bloggers have openly criticized Russian armed forces for failing to prevent the persistent aerial attacks.
Simultaneous Strikes and Warnings of a New Russian Mobilization
While Ukrainian drones targeted southern Russia, the conflict’s toll mounted on the other side of the border. Ukraine’s air force reported that Russia fired 138 long-range strike drones and an unspecified number of missiles overnight, causing damage across 16 locations. In the southern Kherson region, a large-scale Russian drone attack killed two people and wounded two others, according to regional head Oleksandr Prokudin. Additional strikes completely destroyed a shopping mall in Zaporizhzhia.
Amid the ongoing exchange of strikes, Kyiv officials warn that Moscow is preparing to escalate troop levels significantly. Citing intelligence briefings, President Zelenskyy stated that Russian President Vladimir Putin is planning an additional rapid mobilization to enlist several hundred thousand troops before the end of the year.

Ukraine’s uncrewed naval fleet and missile campaigns have fundamentally altered the balance of power in the region. By repeatedly targeting Russian warships and logistical hubs, Kyiv’s forces have successfully restricted the movements of a once-dominant adversary, marking one of the strategic achievements of the war.
