Nike’s projects in the metaverse are becoming… reality. The group unveiled its new collection of sneakers, the “CryptoKicks”, on Friday. A name that almost echoes “CryptoKitties”, one of NFT’s historic projects on the Ethereum blockchain.

Nike’s CryptoKicks are digital sneakers that can be worn in the metaverse. They were produced in collaboration with RTFKT, a digital fashion studio that the American giant acquired in December 2021, taking a first step into the metaverse. The studio revealed the style of these sneakers in a post on Twitter.

Each pair of basketball is associated with an NFT, a traceable digital token on the blockchain. As a reminder, an NFT is a digital title, issued by a blockchain (mainly Ethereum), and associated with a digital asset (photo, video, etc.). Each NFT is unique and cannot be reproduced. NFTs are used in art, the luxury sector or for trading cards in sports.

Shoes that trade at 8,500 dollars

“Like the marketing of the Supreme brand, each product sold by RTFKT is available in very limited quantities. The goal is to create enthusiasm and create a feeling of exclusivity. A few hours after the buzz generated by the announcement of the launch of “CryptoKicks” on social networks, the 3D shoes were traded on the secondary market on the OpenSea platform for an average price of 2.9 ethers – or nearly 8,500 dollars”, underlines The echoes.

Nike’s project is not new: in December 2019, the American giant had obtained a patent for CryptoKicks, without revealing the projects behind this name. But faced with the arrival of more and more fashion and luxury players in the metaverseNike has decided to take the plunge.

Adidas is also in the metaverse

A few months ago, its competitor Adidas bought 144 virtual plots in the decentralized universe The Sandbox. The American group notably launched an NFT collection of sneakers and virtual clothing there: at the end of December, the group thus sold in a few hours around 30,000 NFTs from its “Into the Metaverse” collection, at the price of 0.2 ether, i.e. the equivalent of $23.5 million.
