Nine-Year-Old Rescued from Deplorable Conditions in Marcinelle: Mother and Stepfather Charged

A nine-year-old child was discovered last Wednesday in a house on rue du Basson in Marcinelle (Charleroi, Hainaut) living in a narrow room plunged into darkness, the Charleroi prosecutor’s office said on Saturday morning according to information from Sudinfo . The child’s mother and stepfather were charged and placed under arrest warrant.

Judicial authorities discovered the nine-year-old child in the family home in Marcinelle last Wednesday following a report. There, the child lived in deplorable conditions. “He was in a small room with very little space available, with two square meters of surface area. He was locked there in the dark for weeks, even months. He was only allowed to go out for eat a few toasts. He did not show any signs of malnutrition or physical injuries linked to beatings. More comprehensive examinations will take place to assess his state of health in depth”, commented the Charleroi prosecutor’s office on Saturday morning.

The child’s mother and stepfather were charged and placed under arrest warrant for kidnapping, deprivation of food, assault and inhuman and degrading treatment. The suspects will appear in the coming days before the Charleroi council chamber, which will decide whether or not they remain in preventive detention.
