Paris Carlos Tavares is not in a good position in Germany as head of Opel parent company Stellantis. After violent protests from politicians and unions, Tavares had to withdraw his plans to spin off the plants in Rüsselsheim and Eisenach from Opel. However, he is sticking to his basic course: “Our goal is to make our German locations more autonomous,” said Tavares in an interview with the Handelsblatt and three other European newspapers.
He is concerned that “those responsible on site can find solutions to improve competitiveness and secure jobs”. He cannot understand the resistance in Germany: “Unfortunately, our approach has been distorted for political purposes.”
Tavares sees himself and Stellantis as the saviors of the traditional German brand: “A lot of what we have done at Opel since 2017 has been criticized. But what doesn’t bother anyone is that Opel is now making money.” When Opel was still part of General Motors, the company was making billions in losses.
