The São Paulo Grand Prix shootout saw Lando Norris triumph. Second in SQ1, leader in the following two phases: the driver McLaren left only crumbs to the competition on the Interlagos track. He experiences some relief after the failure of yesterday’s qualifyingwhere the McLarens only ranked seventh and tenth in Q3, but at the same time, satisfaction was not completely there.

Indeed, when asked to describe his trick, Norris responds: “Not good. I just messed up the first corner, I think that was the only real mistake. The rest didn’t look great but wasn’t bad. But the first two corners [le S de Senna, ndlr] have been my sworn enemies all weekend. And I had probably never taken them so badly as today in Q3 [il a perdu l’arrière à la sortie du virage 2, ndlr]. I don’t care, it’s a nice surprise to be in the lead, more or less where we should have been yesterday; It’s a shame, but we knew the pace was there, so I’m happy to have finally succeeded.”

Norris got ahead Max Verstappen of 61 thousandths and Sergio Perez by 0″134, while the Mexican had a lead of 0″128 before the last sector, which only consists of braking and full load. Suffice to say that none of these drivers did the perfect lap, and that the bull racing cars will remain a significant threat during the sprint.

So, as to whether he thinks he can retain first place this afternoon, Norris says: “That’s a difficult question! I have two Red Bull which are always fast on long stints. It’s tough, but the pace is clearly there, it has been all weekend; it’s a good surprise for us. So we’ll know soon. It’s just that no one did long stints, at least not us. So there are questions to answer today and of course tomorrow, but I’m hopeful that we can have a good race.”
