North Carolina has received a significant $1.09 billion grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation to begin construction on the S-Line, a new passenger rail line that will connect communities in North Carolina with Virginia. This grant, announced by President Joe Biden, underscores the state’s commitment to creating an inclusive and efficient transportation system for all residents.

Gov. Roy Cooper expressed his enthusiasm for the project, saying it will provide a safe, convenient and affordable means of transportation, especially for people living in underserved areas. The first phase of the Raleigh to Richmond Innovating Rail Program will be covered by this grant and will focus on the Raleigh to Wake Forest rail corridor. Once completed, this passenger rail service has the potential to reduce travel time between the two cities by over an hour.

The $1.09 billion grant is part of the larger $8 billion in funding provided nationwide as part of the bipartisan infrastructure bill. This significant investment in rail infrastructure demonstrates the Government’s commitment to improving transport networks and connectivity across the country.

In addition to this grant, the National Rail Agency has awarded seven additional grants to the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) totaling $3.5 million. These funds will be used to plan the development of additional rail services throughout the state. These potential rail connections include Winston-Salem to Raleigh, Charlotte to Atlanta, Charlotte to Kings Mountain, Charlotte to Washington, DC, Fayetteville to Raleigh, Wilmington to Raleigh and Salisbury to Asheville.

The $1.09 billion grant received from NCDOT is the largest in the department’s history and underscores the importance of this rail project to North Carolina’s transportation infrastructure. With ongoing investments and improvements, the state is making significant progress toward building a robust and accessible rail network that benefits its residents and promotes economic growth.
