GRAND FORKS, N.D. (UND ATHLETICS) – For the fourth straight conference game, No. 4 North Dakota dropped an overtime contest – this time to Omaha, 5-4, on Friday night at Ralph Engelstad Arena in Grand Forks, N.D.

Omaha’s (11-6-2, 4-4-1 NCHC) Jack Randl pounced on a rebound just 34 seconds into the extra session and the goal stood after a North Dakota (14-6-1, 5-4-0 NCHC) challenge for goaltender interference to give the Mavericks the extra point in the NCHC standings.

Four-different Fighting Hawks found the back of the net, with Jackson Blake (12), Owen McLaughlin (8), Riese Gaber (12) and Ben Strinden (4) all notching goals for the hosts while Garrett Pyke, Louis Jamernik V, Gaber and McLaughlin each recorded multi-point outings.

Goaltender Ludvig Persson returned to the nets for the first time since Dec. 9 after missing the previous series with an illness, as the senior finished with 19 saves on 24 shots to fall to 12-6-1 on the season.

NoDak started the game about as well as you could draw it up, as Blake received a pass from McLaughlin and sniped over the goaltender’s glove to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead just 10 seconds into the contest. After Omaha responded with a quick strike of its own just over a minute later, UND notched back-to-back power play goals by McLaughlin and Gaber to take a 3-1 lead after 20 minutes of play.

The middle frame belonged to Omaha, as the Mavs quickly knotted the game at 3-3 just 3:57 into the stanza, but Strinden answered back by finishing off a 2-on-1 feed from Jamernik V to restore the advantage, 4-3, at the midway point of the contest. Omaha made it a 3-for-3 start with the man advantage, striking for its third goal of the second period to knot the contest at 4-4 heading into the final frame.

UND controlled play for a majority of the third, including a major power play, but could not beat goaltender Simon Latkoczy on any of its 10 shots during the frame to send the game into the extra session.

In the overtime period, Persson made an initial save on a shot from the slot, but Randl was able to pounce on a rebound at the side of the net and give the Mavericks the 5-4 OT win.

North Dakota will look to win the weekend series on Saturday night at 6:07 p.m. from the Ralph. Fans can catch the action on Midco Sports, NCHC.tv and the Home of Economy Radio Network.
