FARGO, N.D. – The North Dakota State wrestling team came from behind to defeat California Baptist 25-15 in Big 12 action Saturday night at the Scheels Center.
Cal Baptist (3-7, 0-4 Big 12) scored the first two victories of the night with a pair of pins to take a 12-0 lead after 125 and 133 pounds. However, the Bison (2-6, 1-1 Big 12) reeled off five-straight wins and took seven of the final eight matches to claim their first Big 12 win of the season.
In the 141-pound match, #29 Gavin Drexler scored a four-point near fall and a three-point nearfall in the third period to come from behind and defeat Darren Green with a 9-6 decision. Then in the 149-pound match, Max Petersen scored the only takedown of the match in sudden victory to defeat Dayne Morton 4-1.
Landen Johnson would then close the first half with a 9-4 win over Chaz Hallmark in the 157-pound match. Johnson had a takedown and four-point nearfall in the first period and then added a reversal in the win. Coming out of the break, Brendan Howes then defeated Drayden Morton with a four-point nearfall in the final seconds to win 4-0 at 165 pounds.
In the 174-pound match, Gaven Sax battled through a first period injury to score the first bonus-point decision of the night for the Bison, winning 8-0 over Justin Phillips. Sax had a reversal and a takedown and secured the riding time point in the second period.
Following a loss at 184 pounds that brought the Lancers to within one of the Bison at 16-15, Spencer Mooberry extended the lead in the 197-pound match and Devon Dawson secured the victory at heavyweight. Mooberry nearly had a fall as he cruised to a 13-7 win over Eli Sheeren. Dawson then scored an early takedown on Chris Island before a second takedown straight into a pin at the edge of the mat at 2:18 to seal the victory.
The Bison will be back in action on Sunday afternoon, as NDSU welcomes in Northern Colorado to the Scheels Center. The dual with the Bears is set to get underway at 1 p.m.
